Following the Questions That Would Not Go Away
For more than two decades, I have worked as a psychologist, psychotherapist, meditation teacher and facilitator of transformational learning experiences. Throughout that time, I have been interested in a deceptively simple question:
What helps human beings transform?
My professional training began within psychology and psychotherapy, but my curiosity quickly extended beyond the boundaries of any single discipline. Alongside clinical practice, I immersed myself in meditation, contemplative traditions and the study of human development, seeking to understand how people make meaning of suffering, growth, relationship and change. Over the years, this inquiry expanded to include altered states of consciousness, depth psychology, embodiment, sexuality and the transformative potential of non-ordinary experiences.
Like many practitioners, I found that the most profound experiences reported by clients—and often encountered in my own life—did not fit neatly into existing categories. Experiences of interconnectedness, deep relational transformation, altered states, contemplative insight and encounters with mystery frequently seemed to point toward overlapping dimensions of human experience that were being studied separately but rarely considered together.
The Threshold Mandala emerged from an attempt to understand this territory.
At the Intersection of Practice
My work has been shaped by several streams of inquiry.
Psychology and psychotherapy provided a foundation for understanding human development, attachment, trauma and healing.
Meditation and Buddhist practice offered a direct exploration of consciousness, perception and the nature of experience itself. Vipassana practice and Buddhist psychology have remained enduring influences throughout my life and work.
Work with sexuality, relationship and embodiment revealed the profound ways in which longing, intimacy, desire and vulnerability shape human development.
More recently, engagement with the psychedelic-assisted therapy field and altered-state integration highlighted striking parallels between psychedelic experiences, contemplative practice and other transformational pathways. These explorations led me to become increasingly interested in the question of integration: not simply what happens during extraordinary experiences, but how those experiences become embodied within ordinary life.
The Threshold Mandala sits at the intersection of these inquiries.
